For those who find themselves in the capital of Ethiopia for more than a couple of weeks, there seems to be one stop that everybody makes. The Hilton Hotel. The home of stellar fruit juices, extortionate internet connections and the Tex-Mex wrapper. We often find ourselves there a couple times a week for a quick sanity top up

Prayer calls float on Cairo’s polluted air. It used to be that you could only hear the mantras from the mosque towers. But now, rusty speakers hang from high on building walls, allowing you to heed them just about anywhere. Add to this the endless conversation of car horns, punctuating the chants like a chronometer that’s

I read that one of the most likely places to get sick is onboard a plane. This is due to two factors. The first is the close proximity of your neigbours when flying in a metal tube at 38,000 feet. The second is the use of recycled air above a certain altitude. The air filters designed to wipe out those microscopic beasts aren’t 100% effective. Fact or fiction, as Nat coughs up another lung, it would seem this is common knowledge among the other passengers. People glare, turn their heads and wonder why the hell anyone would fly when they are sick

Apparently, it’s hotter in the late afternoon because the sun is closer to the earth. As the sun sets, it sinks closer and closer, reducing our distance from it, thus making the temperature rise. This was Nat’s pearl of wisdom explained to me on the way, yet again, to see Yvan Jean-Jean, our mechanic. I don’t know if having problems
