Nice review. I stayed in Wanza, $5 per night, for a few days over Christmas (not their Christmas however) and it simply reminded me of the older peoples houses in Ireland - we are really only a few decades 'more advanced' and I was very confortable during my stay. I almost got conned into attending a special, one day only, traditional dance, offered by a pushy man in a grey suit. I ended up in a house but convinced them I needed to bring my friend to also avail of the opportunity. My friend said I was lucky to have got out without paying big. This was just across street from Wanza.
Didn't fear any danger even once during my stay, lovely people - I even convinced a bank employee to exchange UAE dirhams for me on a Saturday when she wasn't even supposed to be working, genuinely lovely people, would go back anytime. Just to compare, the USA chains were charging 20 times and more for a room, so if you like fluffy towels and power showers better than your hard earned cash I say go for it, Wanza I will remember forever, nights in a Hilton etc, however, are often dull, lonely and unmemorable
